Astray Blue Frame 2nd Revise: GO!

So I created the Astray Red Frame based on the PG version. My wife went to Yodobashi camera in Osaka and snatched up the Master Grade Blue frame 2nd Revise. While I enjoyed putting it together, it's definitely not anywhere near the build type of the PG. Above is the difference as illustrated by BEE-CRAFT, the designer of both plastic models.

Someone seemed to have been keen on comparing the same thing using diagrams. Clearly the Red frame has a bulkier build than its incredibly slender MG counterpart and detail is different in many places. The plan is to keep the PG size and bulk while attempting to redo sections of the Blue Frame that differ "significantly" from the Red Frame.

I just started on this one of course. I have to make changes circled in red, but without distorting the PG size or dimensions to that of the MG's.

Xamel: Cannon 2 - Deploy

And, just a look at the gun mounted and unfolded. Bout time to finish up the spare detail I've missed and then hit that shiny blue frame Astray!

The cannon is mounted somewhat towards the machine's right side. There's some collision going on with the end of the cannon.

Got a nice little start on the cannon. Trying to use what I can find on katoki's version of this cannon, but I might borrow from a previous, optional armament made by Windfall that could assist in various places.

The detail on the bottom is somewhat there, but still lacking. The support beam that connects the bottom layer of the rear cab to the top isn't in place correctly. Most of what I've been able to see in the way of detail seems to squeal of panel lines and the like. I may just go ahead and bump map that stuff in there instead of modelling it. I'll flip a coin on that one.

Haven't much in the way of detail yet, but it's getting there. I had to guess on the slope of the curve that isn't isn't viewable from the side, so it might be quite off. But I guess it would have to be at least semi-level to support the cannon in on it. Got some lumps to hammer out in it though. There are supposedly some crate looking weights on the inside that act as a counter balance or support stand. I'm not sure which, but I threw in some makeshift weights for good measure.

Xamel: Rear Cab

Some things that made me sit back a bit, the xamel's cannon is mounted on the hover cab in the rear and appears to be detachable, at least for some sort of toy gimmick. Trying to build some of that gimmick but fallin' a little short on detail.

Xamel: Arms 1

Got a makeshift missile launcher attached to the backside. I used an early version of the Zaku II's arms to get the shoulder plate and upper arm started for the Xamel. Working from there, I tried to get close to what I believed the arms to look like. Not exactly the same, but similar enough. The lower arm was where I was going to use the rick dom's, but the geometry proved too different and so I started from scratch. The hands are mostly from scratch, but I have to improve the fingers. I'd like them to look more ET-ish -- that is, bonier at the finger joints. Haven't gotten any farther on the legs.

Xamel: Legs 2

Came back from Tokyo to try to get these legs in. Some of the foot uses modified parts of the Nightingale while the leg and innards are a mish/mash of the zaku II and RickDom. The soft skirt was one that I wanted to make where I could employ cloth dynamics for the sag. It wasn't coming out well since parts were still pudging out of the armor where it shouldn't. I went back and hard modeled them instead, but the sag is still coming out in certain areas.

Guul: 3

Last bits... Tried to see what strike might look like standing on this guy, since it was used by the strike (albeit temporarily).

The machine is meant to fold up for easy deployment. It's off by quite a bit. I might have to make compromises on the structure of the main body or the side intakes.

Heading my arse over to Tokyo tomorrow so I'm doing a little packing. Hit F9 to give a little check on this thing... of course there's still a lot of adjusting and detail needed....

Guul: 1

Most mobile suits that cannot take atmospheric flight require some sort of assistance in that area. The GUUL in gundam seed/destiny/etc fills that need, somewhat analogous to the dodai in UC. Anyway, I could use one so I'm going to throw one together using bits an that from here and there. Might come out ok, might not. Fresh start...

Xamel: Legs 1

Moving cautiously on the legs as they aren't built the way I thought they might be. Thinking of using clothFX on the sand shielding skirt so that the cpu computes the "sag" instead of me modeling it...

Xamel: Body 3

The front skirts are kind of there. I had to guess that they would be bulkier than most of the zeon/federation suits I've made thus far, what with all the skimming it would do on terrestrial surfaces. Not much to see in the rear. Haven't gotten to the missile launcher just yet. The legs and rear skirt: I'm thinking that earlier mesh saves of the nightingale might assist with that rear skirt a little, while the legs could be restructured versions of the rick dom's. Not sure, I'll see what I can pull from them. At any rate, the stuff done now needs to be smoothed out a wee bit to get some of the sharpness out of it. No need for engineers to cut their bodies in half if they slip off the armor by mistake, eh.

Xamel: Body 2

Moving through it, but not beautifully. Most of the rear I'm kind of up in the air about so I was using the zaku and hyaku shiki for help getting things through.

Finally getting to this one. The xamel is one that I've been procrastinating on for a long time. The Apsalus aside since it's an MA, the Xamel is another one of my favorite Zeon designs for no really good reason. Wanted to make it for a while but never did, here's to a good start.

Hopefully I'll finish this one and not leave it here for another 2 years...
